Hello
I’m Jenelle the owner of Metis Art Supply. A Metis artist living in Red Deer Alberta. I am passionate about sharing my knowledge about Metis culture through art. I established Metis Art Supply in November 2023, I am a facilitator at heart. I also provide local artists with supply’s to support native art in Central Alberta
My Story
After my youngest brother’s passing in April 2021, I began immersing myself in my Metis culture. I started making ribbon skirts in 2021, this peaked my interest in Metis beadwork. I found it difficult to begin, my family lost its Metis culture during my great grandmothers generation. Believing it was best for the future of our family to assimilate into white culture. This struggle to learn beadwork sparked an idea, becoming Metis Art Supply. I now dedicate myself to teaching and facilitating classes, I developed a beginner beadwork kit with a how to guide to help new bead enthusiasts get started.
A little about my background, I grew up 2 hours north of Grande Prairie. In a small town named Hines Creek, my Metis family originated in Lac St. Anne. My great great grandfather moved his family to a small hamlet north of Manning called Notikewan. The residential schools caused this drastic move, saving our family from the horrors of residential schools. My great great grandmother tanned moose hides and beaded for a living, her story has inspired me to begin hide tanning in the traditional way. My indigenous family’s background is Iroquois, and french, making me mostly Metis and Irish.
